The time spent in restaurants during our stay in Boquete increased as the rainfall did. After three lovely days at the beginning of our stay in this expat and (during dry days) hiking paradise, rain came in and there were no signs of it clearing up within the next couple of days. Antonio, movie fanatical as he is described the rain as ‘this is the kind of rain that is used in movie scenes’. The combination of rain and heavy wind made it to rain sideways all the time!
We spent our time updating the blog and splurging on Boquete restaurants, whereas the plan before arrival to this expat village was to cook as much as possible. Traveling in Panama is much more expensive than elsewhere in Central & South America, and the easiest way to bring costs down is cooking. As you can already guess, that plan failed. We’ll just blame the weather!
These are our 6 favorite budget restaurants in Boquete:
Gelateria La Ghiotta
Named by many as one of the very best restaurants in Boquete and the only gelateria in town. Gelateria La Ghiotta is is real Italian ice cream shop, that quickly gained popularity not only by travelers, also by the locals. The small shop fills up quickly during the late afternoon and evening, visit during weekdays or in the afternoon. We especially enjoyed the lemon and chocolate ice cream, there are about 8-10 flavors available at a time.
Address – Avenida A Oeste & la Calle Principal.
Opening times – Daily 11.00 – 20.00
Join the line as you walk into this bakery, located just outside of Boquete’s center. A great mix of travelers and expats can be found in Sugar & Spice, it’s one of the most popular bakeries and lunch spots in town. Name it and they have it, from wholegrain loaves to some of the best pastrami sandwiches available in all of Latin America! Another winner are the muffins, available in fruity flavors like lemon and blueberry as well as chocolate and our favorite, Oreo.
Order a homemade lemonade with your sandwich, the perfect lunch after a day hike!
Address – Avenida 7 & la calle Principal.
Opening times – Monday to Saturday 08.00 – 18,00, Sunday 08.00 – 16.00
A very affordable and tasty lunch option in Boquete. Daily fresh and home made pitas filled with beef, chicken or falafel for the veggies among us. We loved the home made Tzatziki sauce! Order your pita at the counter and wait for it to be served at your table. Seating is basic, but comfortable and the outdoors is great on a sunny day.
Address – Calle 1A in between Avenida Fundadores and Avenida A.
Opening times – Monday to Saturday 10.00 – 19.00
Re Pomodoro Pizzeria
Every town needs a good option when it comes to pizza. Italian owned Pomodoro Pizzeria is your go to pizza place in Boquete. Tin crust pizzas topped with mozzarella, veggies, salami, chorizo and more. Also here there are vegetarian options available. And don’t forget about the unbeatable Nutella pizza, the perfect dessert. Pizzas is also sold per slice.
Address – Plaza Los Establos Mall on calle Principal.
Opening times – Wednesday to Monday 10.00 – 20.00, closed on Tuesdays!
The second bakery in the list and the place to be for bagels, rye or sourdough bread. On Wednesdays and Saturdays the special Reuben sandwich is served for lunch. The beautiful rye bread, delicious corn beef, mustard and pickled gherkins were perfect!
Morton’s Bakehouse is located in Alto Boquete, about 4,5km from the center of town, it’s worth the bus ride or hike!
